- EC’s WEEE Review: Team of StEP members awarded

In a highly competitive procurement procedure the European Commission (EC) awarded the UNU to contribute to the 2008 review of the Directive 2002/96/EC on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Partners in this UNU led team are the StEP members AEA Technology (United Kingdom), Gaiker (Spain), the Regional Environment Centre for Central and Eastern Europe (Hungary) and the Technical University Delft (Netherlands).

This project will support EC’s review process (see following *.pdf file) of this Directive by presenting and evaluating options for its development. The options will be derived from a sound assessment of available data and will take full account of the current thinking in respect of the life-cycle impacts of WEEE. Secondly, the Directive development options will address the role that legislative clarity, simplicity and efficacy (better regulation) may play in providing for a high level of protection of the environment. The output will be a series of evaluated recommendations for the development of the Directive, based upon current information, clear evaluation and a sound understanding of the issues in this complex area.
