Task Force 1: Policy & Legislation
Our objective is to report and analyze the status of existing approaches and particular policies for electronic waste and used electronic products. Based on this, we explore recommendations for future developments to solve the e-waste problem.
OBJECTIVES, TOPICS AND TASKS
analysis of national legislation and the international framework for controlling, enforcement of trade and enhancing recycling of e-waste and used electronic products
evaluation of present approaches of industrializing regions such as Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America and South-East Asia (including China and India)
setting up dialogues with key players in the field of e-waste
pointing out existing business models and developing new ones to support the sustainable use of information and communication technologies
examining alternatives to existing practice that are more suitable to the situation in the industrializing world
recommendation of new types of policy measures

Research Study: 2008 Review of Directive 2002/96 on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment
This project is one of two studies which will support the European Commission in their 2008 review of the WEEE-Directive by presenting and evaluating options for its development.

Research Project: Best WEEE policies
Overall aim is to comparatively evaluate different national policies and legislation on WEEE and, from this, to come up with legal and political recommendations for â??best WEEE policiesâ??.
For this, the Task Force has already completed
- a rough inventory on national WEEE legislations and policies.
Under development are:
- A draft Policy White Paper on Lessons from the EU WEEE Directive for North America and An Assessment of In-Place North American Electronics Recycling Systems
- A list of necessary criteria and indicators to comparatively assess legislation and policies in place.
Project: Online database for WEEE Legislation & Policies
Overall aim of this project is to make an overview on WEEE legislation and policies available online in an annotatable database.
Research study: Political and legal barriers to reuse
This study intends to investigate political and legal barriers to reuse and how to overcome these. This project is strongly interlinked with TF 3 Reuse.
Research study: Quantification and qualification of the e-waste problem
Aim of this study is to quantify and qualify global streams of e-waste to provide for a sound basis for future evaluations and concerted recommendations.
