Report on End-of-Life Management of Batteries in the Off-grid Solar Sector published by GIZ and EnDev

The Step Inititiative - Always stay informed

The publication, which is authored by Öko-Insitute and Sofies and was developed within the GIZ sector project Concepts for Sustainable Solid Waste Management and Circular Economy together with Energising Development (EnDev), provides an introduction to the management of hazardous waste arising from lead-acid batteries in the off-grid sector, including its end-of-life management. The two most commonly used chemistries for batteries (lead-acid and lithium-ion) are described and the associated economic aspects as well as safety risks are analyzed. Further, detailed recommendations for the handling of both types of batteries are provided.
